The term SEO or search engine optimisation ( optimization ) describes work performed on a website by web designers in order to make them more appealing to search engine spiders / crawlers and therefore increasing the amount of visitors to your website. ie Traffic. The SEO process involves targeting certain Keyword Phrases which are relevant to the types of services or products in which a business provides. The search engine optimisation process is made up from two components, each with their own key elements. These are known as On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO, both of which play a vital role in the placement / ranking of your website within the search results.

Optimise your website to be Search Engine friendly

Although the SEO process is designed to help increase visitors / traffic to your website, it is not classed as a form of advertising, however having said that, you can decided to implement an advertising strategy called PPC or Pay Per Click. PPC involves paying Google for example, to have your website placed higher in the search results for your chosen keywords, than it would normally have, had you not paid. ie Organic ranking.

Organic ranking is the more respected SEO technique for achieving a top search engine ranking. This is achieved mainly through your websites content and how relevant it is to the search parameters.

Why do I need to have my website optimised?

Unless your main priority is to have your website ranking well in search Engines and outranking all your other competitors then you do not really need to have your site optimized. However if you plan rely on your on-line presence and to play a major role to promote your product, then SEO is a must!

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), is an integral part of website design and development process and as such, should not be underestimated. Statistics show that over 85% of internet users today will use their favourite search engine in order to find what they are looking for, and almost 95% of them don't proceed past the first four pages of results.

It is for this very reason that your website needs to be optimised correctly in order to achieve optimal performance and a high Google page ranking.

Will search engine optimisation get my website on page 1?

First and foremost you must understand that SEO is Not Guaranteed! and that Search Engine Optimisation is not a once off miracle fix, so don't be misled into believing that by implementing an SEO strategy, that your website will instantaneously sky rocket to the top of the search results, leaving your competitors in your wake.

The truth of the matter is that SEO is a very complex and ongoing process that requires a lot of patience. Sometimes it can takes months before results are achieved. Believing otherwise will only bring disappointment!

Final Comments

Like so many things these days, change is inevitable. Gone are the days of advertising in hard copy directories, catalogues etc. Instead more and more businesses have decided to move on-line to take advantages of the endless opportunities available and to capture new customers in turn increasing sales. Deciding not to have your website optimised will prevent your site from attaining a high Google ranking and will usually result in seeing your website being outranked by your competitors and in turn sliding down the search results.
